Four-Goal Outburst Sends Men Past St. Francis

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Nate Nussbaum scored twice, Josh Stoltzfus and Isaac Huerta added tallies of their own, and the Goshen College men's soccer team set a season high with four scores Saturday night in a 4-0 win over the University of St. Francis at the Goshen College Soccer Complex.

Stoltzfus opened the scoring in the 17th minute, cleaning up a loose ball after a shot from Spencer Aeschliman deflected off multiple Cougar defenders. The goal was Stoltzfus's first of the season following an injury-plagued beginning to the campaign: he had scored four times and assisted as many in 2014.

Barely two minutes later, Nussbaum ended a six-game scoring drought when he finished a cross that Ethan Francois-Ravalier sent in from the far right side. That output matched Goshen's most goals in a half this season and gave the Maple Leafs a two-goal lead.

Huerta and Stoltzfus combined on another insurance goal in the 28th minute on a through ball to the left side of the penalty area. Huerta's fifth goal of the season also extended his team lead, which he would need because Nussbaum added his fourth of the season in the 63rd minute.

All told, Goshen scored four goals in a match for the first time since Sept. 26, 2012, also a 4-0 home win against USF. Goshen goalkeeper Dean Nafziger made five saves as he pitched a shutout for the third time this season and 12th of his career.

The Maple Leafs tied season highs with 19 shots and 10 attempts on frame. Nussbaum became the third Goshen player to post a brace this season, joining Huerta and Calvin Mangunda.

With the victory, Goshen clinched a spot in the Crossroads League tournament: for the moment, the Maple Leafs sit in a tie for fourth place at 4-3 in league play and 5-10 overall. St. Francis is 0-14-1, 0-6-1 in the conference. Goshen continues its regular season on Wednesday when it travels to Bethel: kickoff at Morey Field is set for 7 p.m.
