Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — In most cases, the only teams in the country that end their seasons with wins are the national champions.
For 2015, make that the national champions and the Goshen College Maple Leafs women's soccer side.
Lena Charles scored her second goal of the last four games Saturday night as Goshen upended Huntington University 1-0 on Think Pink Night at the Goshen College Soccer Complex.
Charles scored 11:46 after halftime after a corner kick from Katelyn Vendrely fell to the ground in front of the goal, allowing the sophomore defender to come forward and finish to the left side of the frame. The assist was the 13th of Vendrely's career, putting her alone in fourth place on Goshen's career assist list in her final career match.
Natalie Thorne and Molly Zook split time in goal to post the team shutout: Zook made five saves and Thorne two as the Maple Leafs posted their fifth clean sheet of the year. The duo was tested along with the defense as Huntington held a 20-7 lead in shots on goal: the Foresters (9-9, 3-6)) put seven attempts on frame to Goshen's two.
On Think Pink night for breast cancer awareness and research, the Maple Leafs wore pink jerseys while Huntington donned pink headbands. Even the officials got in on the act, accenting their blue jerseys and black shorts with pink socks. The jerseys were auctioned off following the game, and those proceeds along with the gate receipts will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
The Maple Leafs raise their record to 5-11-2 this season, an improvement over 2014's 4-14 mark. With a 1-6-2 record in the Crossroads League, Goshen finishes ninth and does not qualify for the conference tournament.
