Box Score UPLAND, Ind. — Natalie Thorne made 14 saves in 108 minutes, but a penalty kick in the 109th minute made the difference as Taylor University defeated the Goshen College women's soccer team 1-0 in double overtime.
Courtney Selle scored with 64 seconds left in the second golden-goal extra session following a Goshen foul in the penalty area. Taylor fired 29 shots in the match, putting 16 on frame: in addition to the goal and the 14 Thorne stops, the Maple Leafs were credited with a team save.
Ginyce Haywood gave the Maple Leafs their best chance to win late in the first extra period, pushing a shot toward the goal in the 100th minute, but Trojan netminder Lauren Engelkes made one of her two saves on the night to keep the scoreboard operator from adding the tally.
Nineteen Goshen players saw action in the match, three more than the number of Trojans who played. Taylor held a 16-2 edge in shots on goal and took all 14 corner kicks: Goshen benefitted from seven free kicks after fouls to Taylor's six.
Goshen drops to 4-8 on the season and 0-3 in conference play. Taylor improves to 6-5-1 and 2-1. The Maple Leafs return to action with a pair of home games next week against Mount Vernon Nazarene and Indiana Wesleyan. The Crossroads League schedule-makers decreed that the Mount Vernon match should come first, and so the Maple Leafs host the Cougars on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Goshen College Soccer Complex.
