Box Score MARION, Ind. — An old axiom says that opportunity knocks once. Whether or not the number of chances is literally one, it is small, and the Goshen College men's soccer team learned that the hard way Saturday night in a 2-0 Crossroads League quarterfinal loss at Indiana Wesleyan.
The Wildcats scored, and despite Goshen's best attempt to equalize moments later, the Maple Leafs were unable to break through.
After the match started with 29 scoreless minutes -- the longest wait for the first goal in an IWU/Goshen game since 2012 -- Caleb Denlinger scored on an assist from Corey Lopez with 15:28 before the half.
Eleven seconds later, off the ensuing kickoff, Isaac Huerta beat a man up the touchline and crossed to Chris Vendrely, who shot from the right side of the penalty area and hit the near post.
The Wildcats added an insurance goal with 22:05 to play when Eddie Hernandez hit a shot along the wet turf from 30 yards away through the defense.
Goshen attempted to answer several times in the second half: Isaac Huerta came the closest, missing just wide of the far post in the 83rd minute. Nate Nussbaum took three shots to lead the Maple Leafs.
IWU was credited with 17 shots to Goshen's six, requiring Dean Nafziger to make two saves in what would prove to be his final college game. Each team had four corner kicks.
Indiana Wesleyan raises its record to 13-5 on the season and will host Bethel next week in the conference semifinal: Goshen falls to 5-13.
