Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — A pair of late scores undid the lead created by Melia Watkins's first goal of the season as the Goshen College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Lawrence Technological University Friday night in the Goshen College Classic.
Watkins scored on a lob over the goalkeeper's head with 23:08 remaining to give Goshen a 1-0 lead, placing the ball just past the outstretched fingertips of Blue Devil netminder Heather Derstine. The Maple Leafs' 12th goal of the season means that, in the second week of September, the team has already matched last year's total scoring output.
But the visitors had two goals of their own remaining, both coming in the last quarter-hour. With 14:55 to play, Claire Huddas turned and fired from 30 yards away after a defensive giveaway. Six minutes later, Goshen keeper Natalie Thorne saved the first attempt at a go-ahead goal, but with 6:36 to play, Alexandra Bryden found space between Thorne's 6'2" frame and the crossbar as Lawrence Tech took a 2-1 lead.
Thorne made six saves over the balance of the game as the Blue Devils held a 14-9 shot edge. Goshen took all four of the match's corner kicks.
Only nine fouls were called by referee Dan McGuire despite both teams subbing early and often: each team will play its second game in as many days tomorrow afternoon. Lawrence Tech, which is 2-1, meets St. Francis (4-1) at noon: Goshen (4-2) hosts Rochester (1-4-2) at 2 p.m. St. Francis defeated Rochester 5-0 earlier Friday evening to start the classic.
More, including comments from Goshen head coach Scott Gloden, to come when available.
