Box Score SPRING ARBOR, Mich. — The Goshen College women's soccer team found itself in the wrong place at the wrong time Tuesday night. Earlier in the evening, the Spring Arbor Cougars earned the no. 8 ranking in the NAIA coaches poll: they demonstrated why in a 4-1 victory at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
Ginyce Haywood scored Goshen's goal with 28:33 to play, slotting home a goal from a corner kick and giving Katelyn Vendrely her 12th career assist, good for a tie for fourth in school history. It was Haywood's second goal of the season, but a lone score was not enough to withstand the Spring Arbor onslaught.
Bethany Balcer scored in the 36th minute for the Cougars, who added another goal in the 49th minute and then struck back twice more after Haywood pulled Goshen within one. Balcer capped off the scoring with 10:34 left.
Natalie Thorne made nine saves for Goshen, and Molly Zook made one stop after entering the game in the second half. The netminders had their work cut out for them after Spring Arbor took 43 shots in the game's 90 minutes. The Cougars also took 10 corner kicks to Goshen's one.
Goshen drops to 4-7 for the season and 0-2 in conference play. The Maple Leafs' road to their first Crossroads League win gets slightly easier on Saturday, when they face a team not ranked in the top 10 in the nation. Goshen visits Taylor University in Upland, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. EDT.
