Despite Scoreless Second Half, Mount Vernon Outlasts Leafs

Box Score

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Ginyce Haywood scored her seventh goal of the season to tie the game in the 16th minute, but Mount Vernon Nazarene scored another go-ahead goal with 22 seconds left before halftime to knock off Goshen 2-1 Saturday afternoon in Crossroads League women's soccer.

The Cougars (9-7, 3-4) opened the scoring after 3:29 when Emily Heaton scored on an assist from MVNU leading scorer Allison Paley. Haywood equalized less than 13 minutes later, taking an assist from Janeth Vela to pull within one score of the top 10 single-season marks in school history.

Heaton's second goal of the game was unassisted and stood up through 13 second-half shots, eight from the hosts and five from Goshen (6-8-2, 2-4-1). For the game as a whole, the Cougars held a 10-9 shot edge, meaning the hosts did not have a first-half shot other than the goals.

Natalie Thorne of Goshen and Madi Moore of Mount Vernon Nazarene led all players with three saves. Heaton's four shots and three attempts on target were both game highs. MVNU held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.

Despite Goshen's loss, the Maple Leafs clinched at least ninth place in the conference when Huntington upended Bethel Saturday afternoon. The top eight teams in the 10-team league after the regular season concludes next Saturday reach the Crossroads League tournament:

Goshen can clinch a spot in the tournament for the first time since 2007 on Wednesday if the Maple Leafs post a better result than Huntington: GC faces Indiana Wesleyan at 7 p.m., the same time Huntington visits Marian.
