Box Score MARION, Ind. — Indiana Wesleyan University opened the scoring less than 12 minutes into the game and never looked back in a 3-0 victory over the Goshen College women's soccer team Wednesday night on the IWU campus.
Olivia Schmidt scored after 11:27 on a rebound from a shot by Lexis Garcia. With 3:50 left before halftime, Schmidt added an assist on a cross to Tia Sanford and the Wildcats entered halftime up 2-0.
The Wildcats (9-5-2, 4-3-1) got a scare less than 15 minutes into the second half when their goalkeeper was sent off with a red card; with the backup in the game, the shutout win is not credited individually to either player.
Sienna Pinskey scored with 10:05 left in the game, slotting home a cross from Madison Abbott, to give IWU its final 3-0 lead.
Natalie Thorne made seven saves between the pipes for GC (6-9-2, 2-4-1), which was unable to clinch its first Crossroads League tournament berth since 2007 with the loss. Thorne moved into sixth place on Goshen's all-time save list as she ratcheted her career total up to 309, one more than 1998 alumna Rachel Springer.
The Wildcats committed eight of the match's 13 fouls and took 24 shots while conceding one. Neither team took a corner kick.
Goshen concludes its regular season Saturday against Grace, with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. at the John Ingold Athletic Complex. The late kickoff means that Goshen, which is tied for seventh in a 10-team league in which eight sides reach the tournament, will know the result posted by ninth-place Huntington, which plays at 2 p.m.
Due to lightning delays around the conference on Wednesday night, the playoff picture is less clear than expected and will be added once all matches are final.
