Scoreless Draw Earns GC First CL Tourney Bid In Nine Years

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Natalie Thorne made 10 saves in the final home match of her career as the Goshen College women's soccer team locked in a berth in the Crossroads League tournament for the first time since 2007 with a 0-0 double-overtime draw against Grace College on Saturday night at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.

Goshen (6-9-3, 2-5-2) mustered only four shots in the 110-minute match, but got a point out of the contest with a draw and finished alone in eighth place in the 10-team conference standings.

Grace (5-6-4, 4-2-3), which finished fourth in the league, tried 12 shots in the first half and eight in the second. Kristen Bellinger led the team with six tries, followed by four from Meredith Hollar. That duo plus Maile Grout were the only Lancers to put more than one attempt on frame.

The Lancers had perhaps their best chances of the night in the first overtime period on a cool October evening where temperatures dropped into the mid-40s. With 2:22 to go in the 10-minute stanza, Hollar's shot from distance was knocked over the bar; 46 seconds later, she hit the left post on an attempt from the left side, only to watch the ball ricochet across the goal mouth without being cleared. Liz Van Wormer fired an attempt off the crossbar less than half a minute after that.

Neither team had a player carded in the game despite 27 total fouls. Grace took eight of the nine corner kicks. Ardys Woodward took two shots for the Maple Leafs.

Goshen will visit conference champion Spring Arbor next Saturday in the first round of the CL tournament. Kickoff time has not yet been announced, but is expected to be in the afternoon as the Cougars will also host a quarterfinal in the men's tournament.
