Box Score INDIANAPOLIS — Janeth Vela scored less than two minutes into the second half, but Marian University had done that twice in the first half and added two more scores in the final six minutes as the Maple Leafs of Goshen College dropped a 4-1 Crossroads League decision at St. Vincent Health Field.
The Knights used goals in the first, 25th, 84th and 86th minutes to bookend Vela's strike with 43:24 left in regulation. Hannah Mummert scored the first and last goals for Marian (8-5, 3-1), with Maria Farmer adding the second and Olivia Annee the third.
Vela, Megan Bower and Carolina Villalobos all took shots for Goshen (6-5-2, 2-1-1). Natalie Thorne made seven saves in taking the loss. Melissa Sturgill went the distance for the shutout for MU.
Marian finished the match with a 20-3 edge in shots, an 11-1 advantage in terms of shots on frame, and all nine of the match's corner kicks. Kellie Cavanaugh led all players with six shot attempts.
"We played them pretty well for most of the game, but we took the first 20 minutes and the last 10 off and that's what's supposed to happen when you do that," said Goshen coach Scott Gloden. "In the middle 60, we played great soccer and worked hard. We got a great buildup and goal from Janeth. Carolina Villalobos and Caitlin Hughey played well on the outside."
The loss dropped Goshen to a tie for fourth in the 10-team Crossroads League; Marian and Taylor, the latter ranked 19th in the country and the former receiving votes, are tied for second.
Goshen returns home to host defending national champion Spring Arbor, winners of 30 straight matches, at 2 p.m. Saturday. The match is part of Goshen College's Homecoming Weekend and follows the college's reception for the Champions of Character award winners from noon to 1:30.
