Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Ardys Woodward and Janeth Vela scored first-half goals 67 seconds apart as Goshen defeated Bluffton 2-0 in women's soccer action Thursday night at GC's John Ingold Athletic Complex.
Goshen (2-1) took the match's first 13 shots. Woodward missed with the ninth—more accurately it was saved by Beaver netminder Courtney Davis—but when the ball came back to Woodward, she didn't miss again, firing low and right into a mostly open net after 16:53.
Vela scored an unassisted goal off a giveaway at the top of the box with 27:00 left in the half. All told, Goshen took 17 shots in the first half and put 10 on frame. GC also held a decided 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
With his team playing its third full match in 101 hours, Goshen coach Scott Gloden substituted liberally throughout the game: all 10 starting field players were subbed out in the first half and 23 Maple Leafs saw the field at some point.
Molly Zook played the second half between the pipes for Goshen, marking the first time this year that Natalie Thorne has been relieved. Each goalkeeper made one save. Zook's was particularly significant: it was the 71st of her career, breaking a tie with 1996 graduate Kristy McPhillips for the 10th-most in school history.
Bluffton (0-0), which was counting the game as an exhibition, took 10 shots on the night and put two on frame. The Maple Leafs were judged to have been offside on seven occasions.
After four days off, Goshen finishes a three-game homestand at 7 p.m. Tuesday night when it hosts Marygrove.
