GOSHEN, Ind. — Darius Rawlins scored on an assist from Calvin Mangunda to tie the game with 17:28 left in regulation as the Goshen College men's soccer team and William Penn University deadlocked in a 1-1 draw to wrap up the first night of the Goshen College Classic on Friday evening at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
The first half saw plenty of action at both ends of the field, but no goals to show for it. The Statesmen (1-1-1) had two corner kicks turn into shots on goal, both of which were easily saved by Maple Leaf netminder Johan Escalante.
Each team recorded six shots and earned four corner kicks, and heading into the halftime break the only stats that differed were fouls (Goshen committed six, William Penn four) and saves (two for Escalante and one for Statesmen goalie Emannuel Esparza).
The second half saw much of the same, but this time with different end results. The Statesmen opened the scoring in the 65th minute when Joey Messina finished home a cross from Renato Firmento for a 1-0 lead. Eight minutes later Goshen freshman Rawlins beat the keeper to a through ball from senior Mangunda and flicked the ball into the far-side netting to knot the game at 1-1.
The final 17 minutes of regulation saw numerous opportunities for both teams, including a goal for William Penn that was called back due to an offside flag, and for the second time in as many chances this year, a Friday night Maple Leaf home game offered bonus soccer for all in attendance.
Each team registered five shots in the second half, while William Penn earned all six of the corner kicks in the second 45 minutes. Each team mustered five shots in the second stanza, but only four found the frame. Outside of the goal, Goshen (1-1-2) held its opponent without a shot on goal in the second half.
William Penn registered the only two shots of the first 10-minute overtime, whereas each team took two shots in the second extra session. Neither team scored as the game finished a 1-1 draw.
Overall William Penn tallied 15 shots, took 11 corner kicks and committed nine fouls, while Goshen hit 13 shots, earned five corner kicks, and finished with 16 fouls. Escalante ended with five saves for the Maple Leafs.
Nenad Markovic led all players with seven shots for William Penn: the remaining 30 players to appear attempted no more than two each.
