Box Score HOWELL, Mich. — The Cougars of Cleary University opened the scoring midway through the first half and used two late insurance tallies to make the lead stand up in a 3-0 women's soccer victory over Goshen College on Friday evening at Page Field.
Kendra Pennington opened the scoring for Cleary (1-0) in her first college game, putting a ball into the net after 23:33 had elapsed on a give-and-go from classmate Harley Gorzelski. After a bevy of Maple Leaf attacks, Gorzelski added a goal of her own off the Cougars' fourth corner kick with 17:07 to play.
Emma Henig scored the final tally, coming with 10:31 remaining in regulation after a GC turnover in the penalty area.
Despite the scoreline, Goshen had almost as many chances as it allowed: Cleary took 14 of the 26 shots and 7 of the 12 attempts on frame. The Cougars had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks and a 9-7 advantage on free kicks resulting from fouls.
"I was pleased with the pressure we put on Cleary when we were down 1-0," Goshen head coach Scott Gloden said. "But the combination of that unsuccessful pressure and the mistake on the set piece that led to Cleary's goal just knocked the wind out of our sails. Putting together a full 90 minutes continues to be something we need to work toward."
Pennington's goal snapped a 258-minute scoreless streak between Goshen goalkeepers Natalie Thorne and Molly Zook: Thorne made three saves Friday while Zook had one. Eighteen GC players saw action at some point.
Junior Taylor DeJongh led Goshen (2-2) with four shot attempts, including three on frame. Pennington had six and four in the same categories to lead all players.
Goshen returns to action with a pair of home matches next week, beginning with a 6 p.m. kickoff Friday night against Indiana Tech.
