Leafs Sink Pilots, Go 2-0 In CL On Late Drinkwater Score

Box Score

MISHAWAKA, Ind. — Melanie Drinkwater scored her first goal of the season to break a tie with 20:05 remaining in regulation as Goshen College knocked off Bethel College 2-1 Tuesday night in Crossroads League women's soccer action at Morey Field.

Catherine Loera opened the scoring in the 26th minute for Goshen (6-4-1, 2-0), but that advantage lasted less than five minutes before the hosts equalized on a score by Lauren Hostetler. Drinkwater's goal was the 14th of her career, two short of cracking the top 10 in school history, while Loera's was the first of her freshman season

Natalie Thorne made three saves to preserve the win for Goshen, all three coming with the score tied. Allie Smith made six saves for the Pilots (4-6, 0-2). Ginyce Haywood, the most recent Crossroads League offensive player of the week, led all players with three shots for GC.

Goshen was called offside six times during the match and had a decided 13-7 edge in shots on goal. Bethel mustered a single shot and no attempts on target after falling behind 2-1. The Maple Leafs used seven substitutes to Bethel's one and were the beneficiaries of 15 free kicks after fouls.

With the victory, Goshen improves to 2-0 in the CL, winning its first two conference matches for the first time since 1997 and claiming its second road victory of the conference season for the third time in program history.

The sixth Maple Leaf win of the season and second conference victory both put Goshen ahead of its 2015 totals, and Gloden's 11th career win moves him ahead of Jeff Birky and Fabio dos Santos on the program's career wins list. Thavisith Mounsithiraj holds the program record with 42.

After a pair of road games to open league play, Goshen plays four of its remaining seven matches at home. The Maple Leafs return to the field at 5 p.m. Saturday against Saint Francis in the team's annual "Think Pink" match supporting breast cancer awareness. That contest is also the first game of a doubleheader as the GC men host Huntington at 7.
