UPLAND, Ind. — Katie Baer made a career-high 15 saves in the Goshen College goal, keeping the Maple Leafs within one score for more than 48 minutes, but Taylor University found a pair of second-half scores to finish a 3-0 win Wednesday night at Turner Stadium

Emily Calvani opened the scoring for the Trojans (10-5, 3-3 Crossroads League), who received votes in the NAIA coaches poll last week, by curling a corner kick into the goal in the 20th minute. Jourdan Lehman and Bailey Zehr each added subsequent tallies, with Lehman assisted by Morgan Orme 3:38 after halftime and Zehr by Hannah Davis with 27:24 remaining.

Baer faced 32 shots in 81 minutes; 13 of them sailed high or wide of the 192-square-foot goal mouth, with three going in and one more being knocked away by the GC defense. Reserve netminder Kadie Spoor saw nine minutes of action, but the only shot she faced went wide.

The effort Wednesday raises Baer's career total to 94 saves, displacing Molly Zook for the 10th-most in school history. The match also marked the three-quarter mark of the regular season in Baer's first year of eligibility.

"Taylor is a very dynamic team that came at us all game long with a couple of All-American candidates," said Goshen coach Scott Gloden. "That being said, we let them off easy by allowing some soft goals and not putting them under pressure."

Londyn Feasel paced the Maple Leafs (3-9-2, 0-5-1 CL) with two shots, both of which sailed wide. Goshen had an 8-3 edge in free kicks resulting from fouls, although Taylor made up most of that in with a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Lauren Engelkes and Lauren Cammarano combined to post the Taylor shutout despite neither player recording a save.

Each team made liberal use of its bench, with the Trojans using 24 players and the Maple Leafs 21. The two sides combined for 36 substitutions, or one every two and a half minutes, not counting changes from the end of the first half to the beginning of the second.

The loss dropped Goshen five points (equivalent to a win and two ties) behind eighth-place Bethel in the race for the final spot in the Crossroads League tournament that begins two weeks from Wednesday. The Pilots put a cushion between themselves and ninth-place Saint Francis with a 2-1 win over USF on Tuesday in South Bend. Despite the dire prognosis, a logjam in the middle of the conference standings means that Goshen could still post a better record than any of the three teams tied for third.

The Maple Leafs come home Saturday to begin a two-match homestand that will bring them within one date of the end of the season. GC hosts Mount Vernon Nazarene at 2 p.m. in their "Think Pink" match for breast cancer awareness.
