MILWAUKEE — Mariah Roe paced the Goshen College women's basketball team with a career-high 14 points, but 11th-ranked Cardinal Stritch University proved too much as the Wolves opened their 2017 Cardinal Stritch Classic with a 65-49 win on Friday night.

A hot start from first-year Claire Rauck kept the Maple Leafs (0-3) going through the first stanza: Rauck scored six of the team's 14 points, countered by 15 from the host Wolves. Goshen then used a 7-3 run to take the 21-18 lead early in the second quarter, to which Cardinal Stritch responded with eight straight points for the 26-21 lead into the halftime break.

The Wolves (2-0), a perennial powerhouse that has journeyed to the NAIA National Tournament in each of the past 15 seasons, were led by Maranda Huibregtse with 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including a 6-of-8 clip from the free throw line. Kelli Schrauth had the game's only double-double, grabbing 11 rebounds along with 10 points.

In the third quarter the Wolves kicked the offense up a notch, more than doubling their first half output en route to a 53-31 advantage with 10 minutes to go. While Goshen did outscore Stritch to chop six of those points off the deficit throughout the fourth, the final horn came too soon as the Wolves emerged victorious, 65-49.

Goshen shot 16-of-56 (28.6 percent) from the field, knocking down a third of their 3-pointers (9-of-27) on the evening;  Stritch went 23-of-57 (40.4 percent) from the floor, including 8-of-17 (47.1 percent) from behind the arc. The Maple Leafs were held to an even 13/13 assist-to-turnover ratio, while forcing 11 turnovers against the Wolves.

The Maple Leafs return to the Cardinal Stritch Classic to take on Judson University tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. EDT, with coverage on 91.1 The Globe beginning at 2:45.
