Box Score SPRING ARBOR, Mich. — Goshen College held the number-one women's soccer team in the NAIA off the scoreboard for more than 24 minutes Wednesday night, although Spring Arbor University eventually prevailed 7-0 in a Crossroads League match at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
Sophomore Katie Baer made three saves in the first 20 minutes for the Maple Leafs (4-6-2, 0-5) before Makenzie Selvius opened the scoring with 20:37 remaining on the midfield scoreboard.
Spring Arbor (11-0-1, 5-0), which hasn't lost to a Crossroads League opponent since 2012, added three more goals before halftime from Alicia Hall, Bethany Balcer and Rebekah Cotton. Balcer, Selvius and Brooke Beaune all scored after the intermission.
Balcer added two assists; Hall and Annika Hoekstra posted one apiece.
Goshen matched a season high with 20 players seeing action, including backup goalkeeper Kadie Spoor, who played 16 minutes and made two saves in the second-longest conference outing of her career. Spring Arbor also used 20 players.
Balcer led all players with 8 shots and 5 attempts on target for the Cougars, who finished with 29 shots and 19 tries on goal. Emily Ponstein went the distance in the SAU net but was not credited with a save.
Notable Numbers:
4: Wednesday night was just the fourth time this season that SAU had been held scoreless in the opening 20 minutes. Also, Spring Arbor got 4 goals from reserves (Beaune, Cotton and Selvius twice) against 3 from the starting 11.
