Cernak snaps conference skid with OT winner at Huntington

Box Score

HUNTINGTON, Ind. — Lauren Cernak's first college goal got the Goshen College women's soccer team its first Crossroads League victory of the season on Saturday in a 1-0 overtime win at Huntington University.

Cernak, the team's assist leader, needed no help to beat the Foresters' goalkeeper in the third minute of the sudden-death extra session, stepping around a defender to unleash a 30-yard strike that sailed under the crossbar and into the back of the net.

The Maple Leafs (5-6-2, 1-5) had fewer chances than Huntington to win the game in regulation but did a better job of making them count: eight of GC's 10 shots were on goal, with four players hitting the target in the second half alone. Huntington had 13 attempts on frame out of 25 total shots.

Huntington (4-10, 1-4) saw its defense tested from the get-go as Megan Bower fired a pair of shots at the goal in the opening five minutes and Kayla Shaw added an attempt wide in the 7th minute. The hosts regained momentum before the halftime intermission, though, finishing the opening 45 minutes with 13 total shots. Goshen goalkeeper Katie Baer made 4 of her match-high 9 saves in a 15-minute span late in the first half to keep the match scoreless.

The second half was Huntington's turn for a hot start with nothing to show on the scoreboard after shots from three players in the opening 10 minutes. A Forester foul set up an Allison Ebersole free kick for Goshen's first chance of the half in the 59th minute, but it was saved.

The teams would combine for two shots on goal over the next 17 minutes as time wound down before peppering each other with two corner kicks and five shots on goal over the final 14 minutes of the second half. Cernak's goal 146 seconds after the extra-time kickoff was the first shot of the period.

Goshen came out ahead on free kicks as Huntington was called for 12 fouls to Goshen's 3. Neither team was called offside in the match.

Ebersole led Goshen with three total shots; she, Bower and Cernak both had two attempts on goal. Matea Knispel led Huntington with eight shots, three of which forced saves.

Notable Numbers:

2: Goshen has two overtime wins this season, matching the program's total from the last five seasons combined. Amanda Heckaman scored the other game-winner at Cleary University on August 28.

13: The lone goal of the match was Goshen's 13th score of the season, matching the output of the 2017 team with three games remaining in the regular season.

7: The win pulled Goshen level on points with Bethel and Huntington for seventh place in the conference standings: the Pilots and Foresters have an extra game remaining, however, after their head-to-head meeting was abandoned because of lightning last week.
