Ebersole starts, Beck finishes second straight conference win

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Mara Beck scored the game-winning goal with 62 seconds to play in the first sudden-death overtime period Wednesday night as the Goshen College women's soccer team edged Saint Francis 2-1.

Beck's 15-yard chip over the right arm of an outstretched Cougar goalkeeper sent the John Ingold Athletic Complex crowd home happy as the senior scored her third goal of the season and first since September 2. A pass from near the halfway line, intended for Amanda Heckaman, deflected off a USF defender and found Beck 30 yards out, and two touches later, the game was history.

Allison Ebersole scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season to put the Maple Leafs (7-7-2, 2-5) on the board in the 11th minute, heading in a pass from Beck after the ball came loose after a corner kick.

That 1-0 lead would last for more than an hour before Saint Francis' Aylissa Trosper finished off a deflected corner to tie the score. The Cougars (4-8-4, 0-6-1) tested Goshen goalkeeper Katie Baer 12 times with shots on goal; the sophomore made 11 saves.

Baer posted three saves to keep the game scoreless in the first quarter-hour, but Goshen had the bulk of the chances over the rest of the half, with Ebersole getting another pair of shots in the 15th and 19th minutes.

After the Cougars tied the score, Goshen countered with the next four shots. The Leafs' best chance came with just more than 6 minutes remaining when a USF punt struck a defender in the back and popped up in the air. Megan Bower's shot was cleared off the line and out for a corner kick, which set up another go-ahead attempt for Bella Larsen.

Each team got one shot in overtime before the game-winner, with Baer making a diving save to keep GC alive 38 seconds before Beck scored.

Sarah Lewis made two saves for USF, which finished with 14 total shots including 4 from Ellen Weikert. Bower led Goshen with 4 shots. The Cougars had a 10-3 advantage in free kicks.

Notable Numbers:

3: The Maple Leafs won their third overtime game of the season, improving their record to 3-0-2 in games that lasted longer than 90 minutes.

14: Ebersole's lid-lifter allowed Goshen's 2018 team to surpass the 2017 team in total goals, despite having a game canceled earlier in the season and having two games remaining on the schedule.
