First-half strike stands up for win at Saint Francis

Box Score

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Uriel Macias scored the game's only goal Wednesday night in a 1-0 Goshen College win over the University of Saint Francis in Crossroads League men's soccer.

Tomas Fonseca posted 5 saves as Goshen (7-7-2, 2-3-2) posted its first shutout of the conference season and Ethan Francois-Ravalier added an assist as the Maple Leafs kept pace with a four-way tie for fifth in the conference standings.

Spencer Aeschliman started the buildup to GC's goal when the senior collected a loose ball on the left side of the artificial surface at Bishop D'Arcy Stadium. He sent a square pass to Francois-Ravalier on the right side of the pitch, and Francois-Ravalier crossed the ball to Macias at the left post with 14:07 left in the first half.

The teams combined for 21 shots in the first 45 minutes, with each side putting 5 attempts on target. Goshen's goal came on its fifth shot on goal; Alejandro Rosales, Nate Nussbaum and Oscar Ocampo had combined to fire off the previous four in a five-minute span.

Goshen held a 6-1 lead in shots on goal in the second half and took both of the corner kicks in that timespan. On the other hand, the Cougars (4-8-3, 1-4-2) put a shot literally on goal in the 52nd minute as Sam Schlegel hit the crossbar.

Schlegel also had USF's only other shot on goal after that point, a 65th-minute attempt that Fonseca saved. The hosts didn't muster a shot in the final 18 minutes.

Matt Granitz led all players with 4 shots for GC, though Macias' 3 tries were all on target to lead all players in the latter category. Schlegel's 3 shots were St. Francis' high.

Notable Numbers:

70%: More than two-thirds of the shots in the contest came in the first half; neither team took a shot after Granitz had an attempt saved with 15:24 remaining.

6: With two matches left in the conference season, six of the 10 Crossroads League schools have records between 3-4 and 2-5. The Maple Leafs are also six points (two wins) shy of second place in the conference.

Up Next: Saturday, Oct. 20 — Goshen at Mount Vernon Nazarene, 4 p.m.
