Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. – Goshen College's Katie Baer made 8 saves and Mount Vernon Nazarene's Anna Chrysler made 6, but the scoreboard painted a better picture for Chrysler's Cougars on Saturday night as they topped the Maple Leafs 4-0 at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
Mount Vernon Nazarene improved to 11-4-2 overall and 5-3 in the Crossroads League behind two first-half goals from Alexa Skal and one from Brookelynn Semmelroth. Skal opened the scoring in the second minute before Semmelroth doubled the advantage in the fourth.
The Maple Leafs (6-7-2, 2-6) quickly mounted a counterattack, getting a shot from Megan Bower 25 seconds after Semmelroth's goal. That edge in possession lasted for several minutes, with Lauren Cernak testing Chrysler for the first time in the ninth minute, but Skal added her second tally of the night to make it 3-0 MVNU in the 11th minute.
Taliah Borom and Amanda Heckaman each added first-half shots on goal for Goshen, which finished the opening 45 minutes with 6 total attempts and 4 on target to go with 5 free kicks. Mount Vernon Nazarene took 11 shots in the first half and 24 for the game.
The Cougars got their last goal with 32:02 left in the second half when Amberly Knox finished off a loose ball that had squirted free to the left goalpost. The strike came on Knox's 7th shot of the game, a match high: Kaitlin Meade led MVNU with 3 shots on goal out of 5 attempts.
Borom led Goshen with 3 shots, while she and Cernak both paced the team by putting 2 attempts on goal. Kaitlyn Begley added a second-half shot on target in the final home game of her junior season. Goshen recognized its three seniors before the game on the coldest night of the season, which saw wind chills dip into the upper 20s.
Each team finished the game with 6 fouls.
Up Next: Goshen hits the road one last time in the regular season, seeking a victory to bolster its Crossroads League tournament hopes in a visit to Indiana Wesleyan University at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
