Box Score MARION, Ind. — Katie Baer made 10 saves to augment her Crossroads League-leading total in the last match of the regular season Wednesday, but Indiana Wesleyan University topped Goshen College 2-0 in women's soccer action.
Goshen (6-8-2, 2-7) held Indiana Wesleyan scoreless for the first 30-plus minutes of each half in the match, which was moved to Oak Hill High School due to the field conditions at IWU's home facility.
Neither team took a shot in the first seven minutes, and it would take another 10 minutes beyond that for IWU (11-5-1, 5-3-1) to get a second shot on goal. Each team had a player put multiple shots on goal in the first half: Goshen's Bella Larsen had attempts saved in the 26th and 35th minutes while Lauren Turner tested Baer in the 7th, 31st and 36th minutes.
The first Wildcat goal came 6:58 before halftime and was credited to Hannah Severs on a 40-yard shot. Taliah Borom had GC's best chance to equalize before halftime when the Maple Leafs earned a late free kick from an offside flag, but her attempt missed wide in the waning seconds.
Any sluggishness from the start of the first half didn't carry over into the second stanza as the first five minutes included two saves and a corner kick. Borom and Megan Bower each had chances to level the score with shots on goal early in the second half, but IWU goalkeeper Alex Seabeck kept the ball out of the net in both instances. Kaitlyn Begley also had a shot turned aside in the 65th minute.
The Wildcats got an insurance goal with 14:21 remaining when Tia Sanford headed in a cross from Hannah Severs.
Each team earned 7 free kicks through absorbing their opponents' fouls; the Wildcats took five of the match's six corner kicks. Seabeck made six saves in net for IWU.
While Wednesday was slated to be the final day of the Crossroads League regular season, a makeup game has thrown a wrench into that equation and leaves Goshen's hopes of a second postseason appearance in three years hanging in the balance.
Bethel will host Huntington at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mishawaka; the Maple Leafs will finish the season as the eighth seed and make the conference tournament if Bethel wins or if the match is a draw. A Huntington victory would send both Bethel and Goshen into the postseason at GC's expense.
Quoting Goshen head coach Justin Crew:
"Tonight we played one of our most complete games of the season. The result is disappointing but I was very happy with the overall performance. I was really proud of the team's effort tonight and it was a really good game. Katie Baer played great and Taliah Borom had one of her best games. Kayla Shaw also did very well. Unfortunately, getting into the conference tournament is out of our hands now."
Notable Numbers:
146: Baer finishes the regular season with 146 saves, 17 more than her total from a season ago. That gives her the eighth-most saves in a single season in program history; in a postseason appearance, she would need two more stops to reach the top six. Her almost-two-year total of 275 saves is already number 8 on GC's all-time list.
3: Borom led the Maple Leafs with 3 shots, all of which came in the final 50 minutes.
Up Next: To be determined based on remaining conference game Saturday
