Goshen College

Women's Soccer

2-0 win matches longest unbeaten streak since 1997

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Megan Bower scored her third goal of the season and Lauren Cernak assisted on two goals but only got credit for one on Tuesday as Goshen College topped Holy Cross College 2-0 in women's soccer action at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.

The Maple Leafs (4-1-1) extended a five-match unbeaten streak by outshooting Holy Cross (2-2-1) by a factor of more than 4 to 1. Goshen got off 17 shots, nine of which were on target, and held the Saints to four attempts, only two of which reached netminder Katie Baer. GC also took four of the match's five corner kicks.

GC had the bulk of the early chances, outshooting the Saints 8-1 in the first half of the match including three tries from Taliah Borom in the first quarter-hour. Borom had the honor of the game's first shot on goal, which was saved in the fourth minute.

The long view would say that Borom helped set up Goshen's opener, but the literalist would say the Maple Leafs didn't really score an opener at all.

A 16th-minute shot from the junior became the second save of the match for HCC keeper Sydney Bright and the Saints cleared the ball back up the field. After Goshen regained possession and worked its way down the right touchline, Cernak served a pass into the penalty area in the direction of two Maple Leaf attackers. The ball found neither of them, with a clearance attempt instead producing an own goal and putting the hosts up 1-0. College soccer's statistical guidelines mean that no assist can be credited on an own goal.

The Maple Leafs would take five more shots over the balance of the half with an additional attack cut down by an offside flag. Cernak and Bower connected on the team's insurance goal with 8:53 remaining after a Saint foul, when Cernak's left-side free kick produced a rebound to the goalkeeper's left in the six-yard box.

Holy Cross' first shot of the game was blocked in the 39th minute; it would take until the 58th to get a shot on goal.

GC nearly added another goal three minutes after halftime except for another offside infraction; the hosts got off 6 shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but 4 sailed wide and Bright made 2 saves.

Borom led all players with 5 shots and 3 on target; Bower had 3 and 2 respectively and Cernak hit the target with both of her tries.

Goshen's 4-1-1 start is the team's best mark through six matches since the 2013 team started 5-1-0. The five-match unbeaten streak is the fourth in school history, the first since a five-match win streak in October 1997, and one shy of the program record set in August and September of 1997.

The Maple Leafs' 12-goal output so far this season is already one shy of last season's mark with 10 matches plus the postseason to play; Bower and Allison Ebersole (who also has 3 goals) have already passed the scoring output of last year's second-highest Maple Leaf goalscorer.

The Maple Leafs close out their non-conference schedule Saturday with a home match against the University of Rio Grande. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. at the John Ingold Athletic Complex. The men take on Indiana University East at 7 p.m. in the teams' only home doubleheader of the season.
