Saint Francis trips up Goshen in wide-open conference match

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Lucas Bontreger and Stuart Aeschliman each scored with 10:36 remaining in a half Wednesday night, but the University of Saint Francis took the lead 12 minutes after kickoff and never trailed in a 4-2 Crossroads League men's soccer victory over Goshen College at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.

Bontreger scored his 10th goal of the season in the first half, ensuring that the Maple Leafs (6-9, 2-5) will have a double-figure scorer for the third consecutive season. Aeschliman, the team's two-time defending leading scorer, slotted home a finish in the 80th minute on a pass by Ollie Smith.

Ethan Vigario scored three times for Saint Francis (7-9, 3-4), which broke a tie between the two schools for seventh place in the Crossroads League standings. He opened the scoring with a free kick in the 12th minute, added a second goal from the penalty spot with 4:40 left in the first half, and finished his hat trick 8:37 into the second half.

Ivan Altimirano scored Saint Francis's second goal, which came with 29:33 left in the first half.

The Maple Leafs took all 12 of the match's corner kicks and had a 20-11 edge in total shots, including the first four attempts of the game. Braden Conn made 13 saves for USF, which had a 17-7 advantage in free kicks due to fouls.

Tomas Fonseca made two saves for the Maple Leafs, who held USF to 6 shots on goal. Three-fourths of Goshen's shot attempts were on frame.

Goshen forced Conn to make three saves in the opening five minutes, but committed a pair of fouls in the 12th minute to set up a pair of Cougar free kicks, which eventually led to breaking the ice. Altimirano scored less than four minutes later to double the advantage. Goshen attacked quickly on the ensuing possession, working the ball down for a corner kick within the next minute, but was unable to convert.

The teams went more than 10 minutes without a shot before Bontreger drew Goshen back within 2-1 in the 35th minute, and Aeschliman forced Conn into a diving stop less than 30 seconds later. On the other end of the field, though, USF was able to convert and doubled the lead to 3-1 going into halftime.

The Maple Leafs again had the first two shots of the second half only for Vigario to beat the netminder less than nine minutes in to run the lead out to 4-1. Altimirano hit the post on one end and Luke Bayliss hit the keeper on the left side of the goal on the other end as the clock ticked past the hour mark.

GC would add four shots over the next quarter-hour before Bontreger and Smith found Aeschliman at the near post to come back within 4-2 with just more than 10 minutes left. Saint Francis made three more stops the rest of the way to keep the lead at two goals.

Despite the loss, Goshen held on to the eighth position in the Crossroads League standings: each of the other three teams at the bottom of the table also lost on Wednesday. The top eight teams at the end of the regular season advance to the conference tournament.

Goshen returns to the Ingold Athletic Complex on Saturday for its final home game of the regular season, a Senior Night clash with Mount Vernon Nazarene. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
