Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College women's soccer team clinched its first conference tournament berth since 2016 on Saturday afternoon before dropping a 2-1 decision to Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Saturday night.
Emie Peterson gave the Maple Leafs a second-half lead when she scored with 30:15 left in regulation and Katie Baer made 8 saves.
The Maple Leafs (7-7-1, 2-5-1) wrapped up a postseason berth before ever setting foot on the field when Huntington and Bethel each lost in the two Crossroads League afternoon games. With those results, which included a win by sixth-place Taylor, Goshen is locked into the seventh seed, the team's best finish in the Crossroads League since 2007.
Mount Vernon Nazarene (10-4-3, 5-1-2) had something to say about Goshen's hopes of improving its seed, however, taking five shots in the first 15 minutes.
Baer would finish the first half with 6 saves against 21 Cougar shots, but neither team was able to solve the other defense to open the scoring. Mount Vernon Nazarene had a 4-1 lead in corner kicks.
Goshen scored on its second shot of the game when Peterson finished off a pass from Taliah Borom in the 60th minute. Paige Renshaw had forced Anna Chrysler to make her only save of the game about four minutes earlier.
The lead lasted five minutes and 12 seconds before Kayla Kalischuk leveled the score for MVNU on an Amberly Knox assist with 25:03 remaining. After another shot for each team, Brookelynn Semmelroth finished a corner kick from Sarah Townsend with 14:44 showing on the clock for the go-ahead goal.
Goshen' best chance to equalize came off a 78th-minute corner kick, but the Cougars took possession and missed a shot at the other end a minute later. Paige Renz hit the crossbar and Townsend tested Baer with another shot as time wound down.
MVNU finished with 31 shots to Goshen's 3 and a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. Goshen took 14 free kicks to MVNU's 9.
Goshen will conclude its regular season on Wednesday when the Maple Leafs host Indiana Wesleyan University, which will be trying to wrap up an outright league championship. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
