Trojans top Maple Leafs despite solid defensive effort

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Paige Renshaw scored in the final five minutes and Katie Baer made 10 more saves Wednesday night, but the Goshen College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Taylor University in Crossroads League action at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.

Kaitlyn Begley picked up the assist for the Maple Leafs (6-4, 1-2), who played up a player for more than 55 minutes after a Taylor red card with 10:42 left before halftime. Begley's through ball set up Renshaw for the low far-post finish to put Goshen on the scoreboard.

Hannah Waltz and Jourdan Lehman took care of the scoring for the Trojans (9-1-1, 2-0-1). Waltz ended the scoreless stalemate with 28:37 remaining, firing a shot over the defense into the right side of the goal frame, and Lehman doubled the lead when she followed the rebound of Erin Teevans' shot with 14:04 showing on the scoreboard clock.

Taylor finished the day with 20 shots to Goshen's 7 and posted a 12-3 edge in shots on target. The Trojans took 7 corner kicks to the Maple Leafs' 1. With the exception of Renshaw's goal, Megan Williams saved both of Goshen's other two shots on goal.

The Trojans had the bulk of the early possession, forcing Baer to make five saves by the 15 minute mark but not successfully breaking through until the middle of the second half. Goshen registered its first shot in the 35th minute on a Beatriz Meneghin free kick before Renshaw and Noelia Calderon added first-half shots as well.

Meneghin took Goshen's first shot of the second half and the last one as well: while the Trojans were the team with the 88th-minute corner kick after the Maple Leafs got on the scoreboard, Meneghin missed high with 44 seconds remaining in a final hope for a tie.

Goshen goes back on the road Saturday for a trip to Marian University in Indianapolis, with kickoff set for noon at St. Vincent Health Field.
