Box Score LA CROSSE, Wis. — Graysen Cockerham led the Goshen College women's basketball team with 11 points Friday afternoon as the Maple Leafs sustained a 77-56 loss to Cardinal Stritch University at the Viterbo University Tip-Off Classic.
Keyaira Murff nabbed a game-high 6 rebounds for the Maple Leafs (1-2), who had three of their five starters shoot 50 percent or better from the floor as Murff scored 7 points and Alyson Prigge added 6. Suzanna Yoder contributed 3 steals and Graysen Cockerham led the team with 5 assists.
The Wolves (1-0), who received votes in the preseason NAIA Division II coaches poll, put four starters into double figures in the scoring column, led by Sam Kirk's 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Jalah Harris added 16 points, Kara Shimko chipped in 13 and Jolisa Ross scored 11.
Kirk led all players with 7 assists and 4 steals; Ross also had 4 takeaways and Shimko added 3. Stritch shot 53 percent (30-of-57) from the floor and 44 percent (7-of-16) from 3-point range.
The Wolves hit on 15 of their 31 shots in the first half, taking the lead with a 6-0 first-quarter run and holding a 19-12 advantage at the quarter. The Maple Leafs shot 40 percent (6-of-15) in the second stanza, trimming the margin to 5 points on a pair of occasions before trailing 38-27 at the intermission.
Each team had its lowest-scoring quarter in the third period and its highest-scoring quarter in the fourth: Cockerham, Yoder and Claire Rauck all sank 3s for Goshen in an 18-point fourth quarter, while Stritch put up 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting.
The Maple Leafs finished with fewer free throws than their opponents for the first time this season, but the fouls were not a major part of the story: the teams combined for 24 fouls and 22 foul shots, with no player getting whistled more than three times.
Goshen finished 21-for-54 (39 percent) from the floor, 8-for-29 (28 percent) from long range and 6-for-8 (75 percent) at the foul line. Cardinal Stritch made 10 of 14 free throws for 71 percent.
Goshen wraps up the tournament and its two-game road trip on Saturday against Mount Mercy University of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. EDT before Viterbo plays Cardinal Stritch at 6.
