Eagles too much to take for soccer men

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Robert Morris University topped Goshen College 4-0 Saturday night in a men's soccer match at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.

Matthias Moser scored twice for the Eagles (3-0), who opened the scoring with a goal by Anthony Aldape inside of 5 minutes and doubled their lead on a Moser lob over the defense with 9:35 left in the first half.

The rest of the scoring came in the last quarter-hour: Moser took a diagonal pass and finished with 14:35 remaining in the game, and Herman Herding's cross to Dean Groen in the 79th minute set the final score.

Goshen (0-4) took more shots than its guest by a 15-14 margin, but the Eagles finished with 8 shots on goal to Goshen's 5. Tomas Fonseca made 4 saves for the hosts and Fabio Beyer had 5 for RMU.

Kristian Gecaj led Goshen with 4 shots; Lucas Bontreger and Tristan Smucker followed with 3 apiece. Bontreger was the lone Maple Leaf to put all of his attempts on target.

The victory marked the third straight win for the road team in the Eagle-Maple Leaf series: Goshen won in Arlington Heights, Illinois, in the first meeting in 2014 before RMU emerged from the last two games, both at Goshen.

Goshen plays its second match of the two-match homestand on Wednesday, when it welcomes Lourdes University to the facility at 7 p.m. for the last of two doubleheaders this season. The Maple Leaf women start the festivities by playing host to Bluffton at 5.
