Macias, Bontreger score again as Leafs deal first loss to GSU

GOSHEN, Ind. — Lucas Bontreger and Uriel Macias each scored for the Goshen College men's soccer team, which ran its winning streak to four games on Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over Governors State University at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.

Goshen (4-4) outshot the Jaguars (3-1) by a 13-10 margin and never trailed in the contest, getting the icebreaker through Macias with 13 minutes and change left in the first half and scoring again after the intermission before allowing a late goal in the other direction.

Macias' second goal of the season came on his third shot of the game in the 32nd minute as the junior took two touches and beat the defense from above the top of the penalty area.

Bontreger doubled the lead 7:22 after the intermission, taking a pass from the midfield and collecting it at the goal mouth before beating the goalkeeper to the far post. It was Bontreger's seventh goal of 2019, surpassing his 2018 total before the midpoint of the regular season, and fifth in the last three games.

Papa Thiam added the counterpoint for Governors State with 1:47 remaining in regulation on a through ball from Dylan Swearengen; the Jaguars would not have a chance to shoot again and attempt to tie the score.

Goshen is idle this weekend before getting into its 9-match, 29-day Crossroads League slate next week. GC hosts Bethel University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25 to open the conference season.
