Box Score MISHAWAKA, Ind. — Kaitlyn Begley and Paige Renshaw each scored and Katie Baer made 10 saves in a shutout as the Goshen College women's soccer team ran its winning streak to 5 games with a 2-0 victory over Bethel University on Morey Field on Wednesday night.
Begley opened the scoring in the 16th minute and Renshaw doubled the lead after halftime as the Maple Leafs (6-2, 1-0) opened their Crossroads League slate with their first win in three years against their local rival. The fifth straight win for Goshen was the most since another 5-game streak in October 1997.
The Pilots (3-7, 0-1) finished the game with a 10-9 advantage in shots on goal but were unable to break through where it counted. Baer made five saves in each half, running her career total up to 325. Alexis Vega led Bethel with four shots.
While Goshen racked up a 16-13 advantage in the total shot column, no Maple Leaf had more attempts than Megan Bower's 3; Bower and Paige Renshaw were the only two GC players with multiple shots on goal.
The Pilots had a trio of early chances in the second half, getting three shots in the first five minutes before Renshaw scored on Goshen's first attempt of the half. After the early salvo, Bethel went almost 15 minutes without a shot and more than 22 minutes before their next attempt. Baer was tested twice in the final 20 minutes and made both saves.
The victory marks the first time since 2016 that Goshen has opened the Crossroads League season with a win; 2016 was also the Maple Leafs' last victory over the Pilots.
The Maple Leafs return home for four of their next five matches, beginning Saturday evening against 16th-ranked Grace. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the John Ingold Athletic Complex.
