Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Areanna Holifield pulled the Goshen College women's soccer team level with a header in the 11th minute and the result held for more than an hour Saturday night, but 17th-ranked Grace College eventually came out of the John Ingold Athletic Complex with a 2-1 Crossroads League win.0
Katie Baer made 6 saves for the Maple Leafs to run her career total to 331, moving the junior into sixth place on the all-time Goshen saves list.
Grace (10-1, 2-0) needed less than seven minutes to crack the scoresheet, getting a rebound from Lea Moessinger's shot to fall to JJ Albue for a 1-0 lead.
While the Lancers entered the game with experience holding a lead, outscoring their opponents 37-10 entering the game, their advantage would last less than four minutes before Holifield headed home a corner with 34:37 remaining to tie the score.
Goshen's counterattacking score forced the Lancers to drop several players farther back on defense, alleviating some of the pressure on Goshen's back line, but Grace still took 10 shots to Goshen's 1 in the first half. Nevertheless, the lone shot proved enough as the teams entered halftime in a 1-1 deadlock.
The Maple Leafs promptly added to their shot total in the second half, getting attempts from Izabel Love and Holifield in the first six minutes before the Lancers were able to post a shot of their own. Play turned into a possession battle in the midfield before Grace unleashed a salvo of six shots in five minutes, culminating in an Abby Van Wormer goal with 15:31 to play.
Goshen had its chances to tie the game in the final 15 minutes, getting a Megan Bower attempt in the 80th minute to test the Lancer defense. In the 87th minute, Beatriz Meneghin fired a lob off the crossbar, setting up a rebound attempt for Kayla Shaw, and Kaitlyn Begley had a chance to tie the score in the final seconds.
The Lancers finished with 22 shots to Goshen's 7 and a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. The final corner kick tally was 9-3.
