Relief work keeps Leafs close against D-II Southern Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CENTRAL, S.C. — Three Goshen College baseball players had two hits and the Maple Leafs' bullpen worked five scoreless innings Tuesday in a pair of losses to Southern Wesleyan University in South Carolina.

The Warriors (6-8) scored first in each of the two games and won by scores of 8-1 and 4-0.

Kody McGuire roped a pair of hits for the Maple Leafs (2-7) in the opener, which saw Southern Wesleyan score in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead through three. Goshen brought the tying run to the plate in the fourth inning after a Brighton Schofield base hit, but a grounder to short ended that rally.

SWU tacked on five runs in the fifth thanks to six singles and an error before Evan Creager's double drove in McGuire for Goshen's tally in the seventh.

Baylee Young drew the start for the Maple Leafs and went four innings with 3 strikeouts; Landon Roth finished the game with 2 innings of scoreless relief.

In the second game, SWU scored in the second inning on a passed ball before extending the lead to 3-0 on a pair of singles. Goshen left runners on second and third in the top of the inning before a single and two passed balls made it 4-0 after the bottom of the frame.

Evan Creager added his second hit of the day in the seventh inning and Toby Fox, Colton Daniel and John Sanocki all threw scoreless innings in relief of Colby Malson, but Goshen was unable to break through despite having baserunners in two of the last three innings.

Brighton Schofield also had hits in both games for GC.

Goshen will use Wednesday as a travel day and head to Jacksonville, Florida, for the last four games of its spring break series. The Maple Leafs will play a doubleheader against Florida National University at noon Thursday and a twinbill against Edward Waters College at noon Saturday.
