Box Score 2 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Goshen College baseball team came up empty in a doubleheader against Florida National University on Thursday, losing 9-3 and 7-3 at Small Memorial Park in a twinbill hosted by Edward Waters College at Small Memorial Park.
Ben Longacre had three hits and Evan Creager added two in the opener, which saw the Conquistadors (3-7) score in every inning from the second to the seventh, and Longacre added two more hits in the second game before FNU rallied with four runs in the sixth inning of a 7-inning game.
FNU opened the scoring with a two-run Daniel Rodriguez single in the top of the second inning in game one. Goshen put runners on second and third with no outs in the bottom of the inning, eventually leaving the bases loaded. The Conquistadors added two runs in the third and one in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.
The Maple Leafs (2-9) broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning, loading the bases on three straight walks to Kody McGuire, Colby Malson and Peyton Smith. Reese Whelen singled home one run and Nate Lange cut the deficit to 5-2 with a sacrifice fly, bringing Evan Creager up as the tying run before a pickoff and a foulout ended the inning.
FNU added a pair of home runs over the next two innings before Longacre drove in Creager with a one-out single in the sixth to make the score 7-3. The Conquistadors added a leadoff single and a two-run shot in the seventh to make it 9-3, the final score.
Florida National ran 21 players through the lineup at some point, including five pitchers. Jorge Carrero went 4 for 4 with 4 runs and three runs batted in behind two doubles and two home runs. Ezequiel Valdez had 3 hits and Manuel Blanco 2. Blanco and Daniel Rodriguez each drove in a pair.
Mario Benjamin started and went 3 innings for the Conquistadors, giving up 2 hits and 5 walks while striking out 6. Kade Gorman allowed 10 hits and 6 runs with 5 strikeouts in 5 innings for GC before Toby Fox finished the game.
In game two, Mitchell Wilson grounded out to knock in Longacre in the top of the first before four consecutive singles plated three runs for the designated home team.
Goshen starting pitcher Kyle Staelgraeve didn't allow a hit over the next four innings, and the Maple Leafs tied the score with single runs in the third and the fifth. In the third, Anthony Todaro led off with a double and courtesy runner Brighton Schofield scored on a throwing error, while in the fifth, Longacre doubled and Wilson singled to make it 3-3.
The Leafs' luck ran out in the sixth inning as the Conquistadors started the inning with four straight singles and a walk. A sacrifice fly coupled with a fielding error made it 6-3 before GC turned a double play; they made the final out on the bases, but not before a run scored to make it 7-3.
In the top of the seventh, Lange led off with a walk but was immediately erased on a double play before a flyout ended the game.
Longacre and Daniel Camargo each had a pair of hits for GC. Stephan Perez Callazo added 2 for FNU, whose seven hits were all singles. Marcel Lopez got the win in relief of Armando Sierra. Staelgraeve suffered the loss after 5-plus innings of 5-hit baseball and 6 punchouts.
