JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Goshen College baseball team capped Spring Break with a win Saturday, knocking off Edward Waters College 3-2 to earn a split of the doubleheader after dropping the first game 9-6 at James P. Small Memorial Park.

The Tigers jumped on GC early, scoring five runs in the first inning of game one. The Maple Leafs added three runs in the top of the third inning, but gave them right back on a three-run homer in the bottom of the frame before scoring three times in the fifth to get within 8-6.

Colby Malson had two hits and scored twice for GC while Kody McGuire had a pair of singles as well. Mitchell Wilson drove in three runs with a double and Ben Longacre scored twice.

Braedon Evans started and pitched five innings for the Maple Leafs before yielding to Landon Roth out of the bullpen.

Edward Waters got two hits apiece out of Cayden Frankie and Marcus Judd, each of whom doubled. Ricardo Santana added a 3-run homer and Judd scored twice; Arnie Ruiz hit a sacrifice fly.

In the second game, Goshen scored single runs in the first and second innings before giving one back in the bottom of the sixth. The Maple Leafs added a tally in the top of the seventh while EWC scored once in the bottom of the inning.

Colton Daniel and Colby Malson combined on a 2-hitter on the mound, striking out 9 batters and walking 3. Longacre and Nate Lange each had 2 hits, including a triple in the former case, while Malson and Anthony Todaro roped doubles.

Saturday's games are believed to be Goshen's first-ever Leap Day baseball games, with the caveat that complete schedules with dates are not known for all 64 Maple Leaf seasons.

The victory improves the Maple Leafs to 3-10 overall entering the Indiana portion of the team's schedule: GC hosts Lincoln College of Illinois on Wednesday in a doubleheader at Grand Park in Westfield. The team will open its Sarge Yoder Field slate on Friday against Taylor.
