Three Score In Double Figures As Leafs Edge Trolls To Move To 4-0

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Dominique Bolden scored a season-high 18 points while teammates Christian Grider and Conner Funkhouser added 17 apiece as the Goshen College men's basketball team moved to 4-0 on the season with an 86-75 win over Trinity Christian College on Tuesday.

Trevor Commissaris narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds: the teams finished level with 36 boards apiece.

"Offensively, Trinity did a really good job of taking us out of a lot of the things we wanted to do," said Goshen head coach Neal Young. "They made it tough for us to move the ball, and then they did a good job of contesting from behind when we got to the rim. That being said, we still found a way to have a very good offensive game with 14 assists and only nine turnovers in a very high-possession game."

The visiting Trolls, who drop to 2-1, scored 10 of the first 12 points to take an eight-point lead in the first three minutes. But the Maple Leafs scored the next eight to tie the game, pulling ahead for good with 6:04 left in the half and holding a 50-44 lead at the break.

"We really challenged certain guys to come out and play better in the second half," said Young. "We gave up 1.2 points per possession in the first. They did that, and we only allowed 0.87 points per possession in the second half. We really had a good second half, although obviously there are still things we can improve on."

Myles Birgans and Austin Halcomb each scored 14 to lead TCC, which was hampered by 29 personal fouls. Goshen shot 50.8 percent (32-of-63) from the floor and made five of its 11 three-pointers.

Devin Heath-Granger finished with a game-high seven assists and two steals. Commissaris posted three assists and Grider had two.

"Obviously seven assists (from Heath-Granger) is good, but we've got to get more guys assisting the ball," Young said. "That's something we'll work on in practice the next couple of days. Once they got the ball, Dom Bolden did a good job down the stretch for us offensively and Conner Funkhouser did a good job all game, scoring a career-high 17 points."

The Maple Leafs return to the floor on Friday at the Gates Automotive Classic hosted by Bethel College. Goshen faces Indiana University East to begin the classic. The Red Wolves enter that contest ranked 10th in NAIA Division II: they face Goshen for the first time since Dec. 18, 2012, a similarly high-possession game that featured 143 field goal attempts (10 percent more than Tuesday).

"It feels good to be 4-0, because when you win five games your first year (as a head coach) and go through something like that, you learn that every win matters," Young said. "With that being said, there are a lot of things we need to improve on – I'd say we are an average defensive team – but I like a lot of the glimpses that I've seen. We're really excited for Friday. It's a big game to see where we're at."

The Maple Leafs are 4-0 for the first time since the 2012-13 season and just the fourth time since 1977-78: this year is the first time in 38 years that both Goshen's men and women have started the year on four-game win streaks.

Tip-off against IU East is set for 8 p.m. in the Weikamp Center on Bethel's campus in Mishawaka.
