Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — The Goshen College men's basketball team started its season 7-0 for the first time in school history Tuesday night as the Maple Leafs dispatched Andrews University 67-55 at Gunden Gymnasium.
Trevor Commissaris scored 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead Goshen in both categories. Devin Heath-Granger went off for his second double-double in the last five games, scoring 12 points and distributing 10 assists. Christian Grider tied a career high with four assists and added 11 points.
Carter Boos added a dozen points off the bench, going 4-for-6 from three-point range in the first half. Kevin Phillips and Conner Funkhouser scored nine and seven, respectively, making Tuesday the sixth time in seven games that four Maple Leafs have scored in double figures.
"I really thought Boos saved us in the first half," said Goshen head coach Neal Young. "We were really bad offensively and he gave us a huge lift with his shooting. He has been incredibly consistent for us off the bench all year and has not played like a freshman at all.
Goshen held a 45-38 edge in rebounding, including a 27-16 advantage after the intermission. The rebounds were there for the taking, too, as the teams combined to shoot 39 percent (47-for-122) from the floor and 53 percent (16-for-30) at the foul line.
"Any team that runs primarily motion offense like we do is going to have some nights where it just doesn't click," Young said. "We had some nice stretches, especially the run we went on to push our lead out to 19, but we could just never sustain anything long enough to really separate from them for good."
In a low-scoring first half, the second Boos three-pointer put Goshen up 11-9 eight minutes into the game. Andrews tied the game again at 15-15 with 9:19 left and was still within six (31-25) with 1:39 to play in the half. A 16-8 Goshen run over eight minutes in the second half gave the Maple Leafs a 57-38 edge with 9:27 remaining, and the visitors never again closed within 10 points.
"Tonight certainly wasn't our best performance of the year, but I think you can attribute some of that to this being our seventh game in 15 days," Young said. "I was pleased with our defensive effort on the whole. Our guys really pressured the ball, got out in the passing lanes, and contested at a high level."
Kris Owens had a game-high 14 points and 10 rebounds for Andrews (0-9), which also got 13 points apiece from Tim McGuire and Robert Moon.
"A lot of people are talking about us being 7-0," said Young. "Don't get me wrong, we're happy about it too, but none of those are Crossroads League wins and we all know this league is a completely different animal. Our guys know we have five practices to get ready for Spring Arbor and we have to take advantage of every minute of those practices."
After starting the season with seven games in 15 days, Goshen plays just four times in the 29-day stretch starting Wednesday. The Maple Leafs have the weekend off before starting Crossroads League play against Spring Arbor on Tuesday, Nov. 24. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Gunden Gymnasium.
