Defensive Uptick Key As Men Finish Weekend With Sweep

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Devin Heath-Granger posted a double-double, setting new career highs inpoints and assists in the process, and Christian Grider added 24 points as the Goshen College men's basketball team defeated Lawrence Technological University 87-76 on Saturday afternoon at Gunden Gymnasium.

Heath-Granger scored 19 points on seven field goals, three of which were three-pointers, and dished out 10 assists: all four of those figures were career highs. Grider knocked down 12 of 13 foul shots and never left the court, playing all 40 minutes. He also shot 50 percent (5-of-10) from the floor and added five rebounds.

Trevor Commissaris scored 13 points, Dominique Bolden 11 and Kevin Phillips 10 for Goshen (3-0), which made five Maple Leafs in double figures for the third time in as many games this season. Goshen made 29 free throws and shot 46 percent (27-of-59) from the floor.

"I thought Trevor set the tone in the second half on the offensive end, just going to the basket," said Goshen head coach Neal Young. "Devin did what he does all game: he lived in the paint and was really good in terms of understanding when he needed to take a shot and when he needed to give it up. And Christian finally played the way that we expected him to play on the offensive end. He's had a slow start the first couple of games, but he took and made a lot of good shots and that was really key for us."

Despite those efforts, Lawrence Tech (0-3) led for the final 16 minutes of the opening stanza. Goshen took its first lead since 6-4 on a Commissaris dunk 14 seconds after halftime, but the Blue Devils answered back with a Jake Mullin field goal on the next possession.

"To Lawrence Tech's credit, this was the first time that someone has come out and played harder and more aggressive than us in a half," said Young. "They're a really hard team to beat because they're so good defensively, they're not going to beat themselves, and they've got a bunch of guys that can make shots."

The LTU lead peaked at seven, 53-46, on an old-fashioned three-point play from Jay Redman with 13:55 remaining. Goshen held its guests to three free throws over the next five minutes and change, with Heath-Granger scoring seven points and Grider six to key a 21-3 run that finished with the hosts up 67-56 at the 8:43 mark.

"I challenged our guys at halftime to come out and play with a higher intensity level on the defensive end," Young continued. "For us to miss 21 shots and only get three offensive rebounds (in the first half) is unacceptable. To our guys' credit, they took that message to heart and really got after Lawrence Tech defensively. We really did a good job of contesting at a high level and then rebounding in the second half."

Goshen turned the ball over just four times while posting 17 takeaways.

The Maple Leafs finished their annual November tournament, currently known as the Best Western Classic, undefeated for the ninth time in 13 seasons. Bethel College also went 2-0 over the weekend, defeating Moody Bible 110-58 earlier Saturday afternoon.

Goshen returns to the floor on Tuesday to begin another three-game week when it hosts Trinity Christian at 8 p.m.
