Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Despite four Goshen College men's basketball players scoring in double figures, the RedHawks of Indiana University Northwest used a 26-of-32 second-half mark at the foul line to post an 89-78 victory Tuesday evening at Gunden Gymnasium.
Christian Grider scored 15 points for the Maple Leafs (10-4), followed by 14 apiece from Dominique Bolden and Devin Heath-Granger. Conner Funkhouser added 12.
Both teams shot better than 50 percent from the floor in the first half, one in which Goshen led 47-42. But the visitors went on an 18-6 run over the first nine minutes of the second stanza, including a 5-for-5 mark at the line.
"I really don't know what else to say other that we are in a nasty funk and we have to find a way to fight our way out of it," said Goshen head coach Neal Young. "This is the same group of guys that rattled off nine straight wins to start the season, including a gutsy conference road win and a great defensive performance against the 10th-ranked team in the country (IU East)."
Quentin Palmer scored 19 points to lead the RedHawks (5-10). He was 10-for-10 at the free throw line, including making eight in a row on four straight possessions at one point in the second half. JJ Pennington added 14 points, Cody Artuso 13 and Darrius Davis 12: Dwayne Haden, who tied for the game high with seven rebounds, was held to three points.
"I have to do a much better job of coaching defense," Young said. "That is clearly our Achilles heel and that falls on my shoulders. We have good enough players, but for whatever reason are not clicking on that end of the floor. I have to figure out the root of our issues and then coach our guys better in those areas."
The visitors pulled down 39 rebounds to Goshen's 26: each team cleaned its own glass seven times. Heath-Granger led all players with six assists and three steals.
IU Northwest outshot Goshen 52.2 percent to 44.4 percent: the Maple Leafs made more threes, eight to six, but the Red Hawks made more foul shots (35) than Goshen attempted (22). A total of 50 personal fouls were called, 26 on the hosts and 24 on the visitors: at one point late in the game, eight players on the floor had exactly three fouls apiece.
"We have 16 regular-season games left, so that's still most of the season to go," Young said. "That's plenty of time to get better and right the ship but everyone has to stay invested and fight the temptation to think me-first thoughts. It's easy to do the right thing when you're 9-0 and feeling great: now we're 1-4 in our last five games and it's not so easy. If nothing else, we will find out what our character is and what we're made of."
The Maple Leafs will have an opportunity to get the bad taste out of their mouths quickly as they play again barely 18 hours after the final buzzer. Goshen's final non-conference game is Wednesday afternoon at St. Xavier University in Chicago with tip-off set for 3 p.m. EST.
