Goals From Baer And Wengerd Salvage Split In Classic

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind.  — Score early, score often.

The Goshen College women's soccer team managed to do only one of those things Saturday afternoon, but the Maple Leafs made a pair of goals in the first nine minutes stand up for a 2-0 win over Rochester College in the Goshen College Classic.

Anneliese Baer scored from the run of play a minute and 48 seconds into the game, with Courtney Wengerd adding an insurance goal 6:54 later, while the Maple Leaf defense allowed just four shots in the contest.

Natalie Thorne started the game and made two saves in goal before giving way to Molly Zook early in the second half. Although the goalkeeper change means neither player gets credit for the shutout, the win marks the third time this season that the Maple Leafs have kept a clean sheet.

With the exception of Baer, whose two attempts were both on target and saved, Goshen's six remaining shots came from six different players. All told, 22 Goshen players appeared in the contest, with just two going the distance as both teams played their second match in as many days.

St. Francis claimed the de facto classic championship with a 1-0 win over Lawrence Tech in the opener: the Cougars were the only team of the four to win both matches after defeating Rochester 5-0 on Friday night.

Goshen raises its record to 4-2 with a visit to St. Francis of Joliet, Ill., set for Wednesday evening. That match will kick off at 5 p.m. Eastern time and begins a stretch where the Maple Leafs play two of the final three non-conference matches on the road.
