Box Score GOSHEN, Ind. — Melanie Drinkwater scored three times, the first Goshen College hat trick since 2012, and the defense pitched a shutout as the Maple Leafs knocked off Purdue University Calumet 4-0 Tuesday night in women's soccer action.
The game remained scoreless through the first half on a slippery field after rain began just before kickoff. Drinkwater opened Goshen's scoring 10:42 after the break when she dribbled through defenders and shot from along the right byline.
Gina Berkey added her second goal of the season with 25:44 remaining on a cross from Anneliese Baer.
Drinkwater's last two scores came in the final six minutes on very similar plays, receiving the ball on the left side of the penalty area on a pass from the wing. With 5:56 left, the pass was from Janeth Vela; with 4:19 to play, Baer picked up her second assist.
Despite the lopsided score, Goshen held just a 13-11 shot advantage. Purdue Calumet, which drops to 1-3-1, put four attempts on frame, where Natalie Thorne made all four stops.
Prior to Wednesday night, Goshen's last two hat tricks had come in the same match: Dana Christner scored four goals and Katelyn Vendrely three on Sept. 11, 2012, in a 12-1 rout of Andrews University.
Goshen (3-1) hosts the Goshen College Classic this weekend, playing Lawrence Tech at 7 p.m. Friday and Rochester at 2 p.m. Sunday.
