Men Use Hot Shooting To Cruise Past Trojans

Box Score

GOSHEN — Goshen College used a 17-2 run late in the first half and never looked back in a 91-73 win over Taylor in men's basketball Tuesday night at Gunden Gymnasium.

After giving up a 5-0 run to tie the score, the Maple Leafs (12-9, 4-5 Crossroads League) held their opponents without a field goal for 7:17 in the midst of a 17-2 run late in the first half. Goshen led 41-27 at the intermission following two free throws from Devin Heath-Granger, who matched his season average with 11 points in the first half.

"I was really pleased with how consistently we played tonight. Outside of a few stretches of a couple possessions here and there we played well for the full 40 minutes," said Goshen head coach Neal Young. "Our defensive effort in the first half was ultimately what won us the game. We have been harping on that end of the floor for a while now so it is great to see that work start to pay off."

But in the end, it was Dominique Bolden who stole the show for the Maple Leafs, scoring a career-high 25 points to lead all scorers.

Heath-Granger added 18 points, missing his career high by a point, plus six rebounds and eight assists in addition to his first career block.

"Any time you have 20 assists on 31 made field goals, you know your guys were not only making shots but being willing passers and finding the open man," said Young. "Devin did a great job of controlling the tempo of the game, got us running when it made sense to run and slowed us down when it made sense to slow down. That's exactly what we need from him."

Conner Funkhouser scored 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including three triples. Austin Hayden also hit double figures in scoring with 12 points: he made two 3s to go along with three from Bolden and one from Christian Grider.

"Funkhouser was without question our X-factor tonight," Young said. "It seemed like every time we got stagnant on offense, he was the guy that made a play. On the defensive end, he did a great job of making Stidom work for everything. And Dom scored the ball at a very efficient rate. He is such a tough cover for opposing defenses and did a great job of picking his spots tonight."

Goshen shot 64 percent from the floor in the second half and 58.5 percent for the game while also draining 80 percent of its free throws. Taylor was held to 30.8 percent shooting in the opening stanza and 40.7 percent for the game.

Another area in which Goshen dominated was the glass, where they grabbed eight caroms of their own missed shots and held a 36-22 edge by game's end. Kevin Phillips pulled down a game-high eight boards, while Trevor Commissaris had seven.

"Our bigs did a great job of not just rebounds, but drawing two defenders in the post and then finding shooters for some big baskets," said Young.

Kyle Stidom led the Trojans (9-12, 3-6 CL) with 14 points and five rebounds.

With Tuesday's results in the books, the conference slate is halfway over with each school having faced all nine opponents once. St. Francis leads the league at 7-2, followed by Bethel, Grace, Indiana Wesleyan and Marian at 6-3. Goshen begins its second-half slate with the best team in the league on Saturday when it travels to USF for a 3 p.m. tip-off.
