Unselfish Effort Comes Up Short In Last-Second Loss

Box Score

GOSHEN, Ind. — Trevor Lockwood scored a go-ahead field goal with 1.2 seconds to play in regulation, and despite trailing or being tied for all but four minutes of the second half, the Huntington Foresters defeated the Goshen Maple Leafs 60-58 on Saturday afternoon in Crossroads League men's basketball action at Gunden Gymnasium.

With the game tied and 6.4 seconds to play, Huntington had the ball on the sideline in the frontcourt following a defensive foul. Derek Hinen received the inbound pass and threw a bounce pass from the right wing to Lockwood in the paint, and Lockwood stuffed it through the basket with both hands. A desperation heave from Goshen was on line but sailed high from three-quarters of the way up the court.

Huntington (8-8, 2-2 Crossroads League) had taken a one-score lead once before, at 58-56 with 32 seconds left, but Trevor Commissaris stuffed home a blocked shot to tie the score. Commissaris also tied the game at 56 following a Christian Grider steal with 88 seconds remaining.

Neither team led by more than six points at any point in the game, with both teams leading by as many as six. Lockwood's 16 points were a game high as he was 8-of-8 from the floor. Grider scored 13, Devin Heath-Granger 12 and Commissaris 11 for Goshen (10-6, 2-2 CL). Commissaris pulled down a game-high 12 caroms, good for a double-double.

"I couldn't be more proud of the fight and the togetherness we showed tonight," said Goshen head coach Neal Young. "This team has had to battle through some serious adversity in the form of guys being injured, but whoever is available always gives me everything they have. What more can you ask of a group of guys?"

Both teams shot 42 percent from the floor in the first half, with the Foresters ahead 26-25 following the opening stanza. The Foresters improved to 59 percent (16-for-27) after the intermission against Goshen's 41 percent (13-for-32). The teams combined for just 24 fouls and 16 free-throw attempts.

"I told the guys after the game that I didn't see a single selfish moment or selfish play for the whole 40 minutes," Young said. "How many teams can say that? Our guys get it when it comes to the intangibles: we just have to keep improving our execution and that's 100 percent my job. We just have to keep working and keep getting better."

Following two one-week breaks, one for final exams and one for Christmas, in the month of December, Saturday's contest marked the beginning of a 15-game, 50-day stretch for the Maple Leafs with all 15 games taking place in the grueling Crossroads League.

Goshen travels to Marion, Ind., on Tuesday to face top-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. EST at Luckey Arena.
