Top-Ranked Wildcats Knock Off Leafs In Marion

Box Score

MARION, Ind. — Trevor Commissaris poured in 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting, but the top-ranked team in NAIA Division II demonstrated why it had earned that honor Tuesday night as the Goshen College men's basketball team fell 95-72 to Indiana Wesleyan University in Crossroads League action.

Lane Mahurin scored a game-high 32 points for Indiana Wesleyan (16-1, 4-1 CL), which made 20 of its 33 second-half field goal attempts (62.2 percent) and scored 55 points in the stanza. Jonny Marlin added nine assists with 12 points of his own, while Nate Bubash posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Dominique Bolden added 14 points off the bench for the Maple Leafs (10-7, 2-3 CL) in his return after missing two games to injury. Conner Funkhouser and Austin Hayden scored 12 apiece.

"IWU did a good job of taking us out of what we wanted to do on offense," said Goshen assistant coach Jon Tropf, who served as acting head coach with Neal Young sidelined by flu-like symptoms. "They limited our ability to run our offense. We did a pretty good job of limiting their three-point shooting (the Wildcats made five, less than half of their average), and held them below their season average from the field."

Devin Heath-Granger was held to seven points but posted eight assists and five steals while playing a game-high 36 minutes.

The Wildcats led by as many as 25 points and never trailed: the game was tied for less than two minutes, all in the first half. They led 40-32 at the intermission.

Each team turned the ball over 12 times, with Goshen posting 12 assists to Indiana Wesleyan's 23. The Wildcats were 18-for-21 (85.7 percent) at the foul line: while 39 fouls were called, no player from either team fouled out.

"We need to do a better job of executing, both offensively and defensively," Tropf said. "We did that well in spurts on both sides of the ball, but spurts don't get it done against the number-one team in the country."

The Maple Leafs look ahead to a pair of local rivalries on their upcoming schedule, hosting 12th-ranked Bethel of Mishawaka on Saturday before traveling to Grace in Winona Lake on Wednesday night. Tip-off for the Bethel game is set for 3 p.m., following the women's game between the same two schools at 1:00.
