Box Score BOURBONNAIS, Ill. — Conner Funkhouser led the Goshen College men's basketball team with 16 points and Kevin Phillips went a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor, but the Maple Leafs opened their season with a 96-78 loss to Olivet Nazarene on Saturday in each team's season opener.
Tyler Crater scored 22 points in 28 minutes for the Tigers (1-0), who took the lead at the 16:08 mark of the first half and never trailed again, although Goshen (0-1) tied the game again and was within six points as late as five minutes after halftime.
ONU used a four-minute 16-4 run across the middle of the second half to seize control of the game, shooting 48.6 percent from the floor in each stanza. The hosts racked up 20 assists on 35 field goals while committing just eight turnovers, a number they more than cancelled out with nine steals.
Goshen point guard Devin Heath-Granger posted seven assists in 33 minutes, leading all players in both categories. Heath-Granger also scored 12 points, slotting in between Phillips' 14 and 11 from Xavier Newson on the list of four Maple Leafs who reached double figures.
The Maple Leafs cleaned the glass 26 times but allowed half that many boards to their opponents on the offensive glass alone: ONU's Nic Reed led all players with 12 caroms, followed by teammate Chris Green with seven out of the backcourt. Christian Grider had six, one more than Heath-Granger and Alhassan Barrie, to lead GC.
Goshen shot 45 percent from the floor and finished with the higher of the two three-point percentages, 28 percent to 25 percent, but Olivet Nazarene also went 21-for-25 (84 percent) at the foul line in the second half to salt the game away. GC finished with 15 turnovers.
After the opener, head coach Neal Young's team has five days to prepare for its next two opponents, who visit Gunden Gymnasium less than 24 hours apart as part of next weekend's Best Western Hoopfest. Goshen faces Lourdes at 6 p.m. Friday and Ohio Christian at 3 p.m. Saturday.
More, including comments from Young, to come when available.
