Box Score ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Devin Heath-Granger may not have scored often Thursday night, but the scoring he did could hardly have been timelier.
With his team up three but on defense in the final three-fifths of a minute, the Goshen point guard stepped in front of a pass on the left wing and stole it. When he was chased down and fouled with 28.6 seconds remaining, the ensuing free throw gave the Maple Leafs a 69-65 lead en route to a 71-65 men's basketball road victory over Concordia University.
Xavier Newson added the volume scoring for Goshen (2-2), leading all players with 21 points (including the next two free throws in the waning seconds) and eight rebounds. Kody Chandler added a season-high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting and Kevin Phillips added 15.
Jared McDaniel led Concordia (2-2) with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting: Connor Phee and Luke Diekevers each paced the Cardinals with eight rebounds.
Each team started out cold on offense, with the halftime score only reaching 25-25 on 10 field goals per side. Despite taking three fewer shots in the second half than it did in the first, Goshen made seven more, knocking down 17 of 34 tries in the final 20 minutes to finish the game shooting 38 percent from the floor. What GC didn't have in shooting it made up with 15 offensive rebounds, including four from Phillips.
"Without question, the offensive rebound differential was the difference in the game," said Goshen head coach Neal Young. "To only allow four to a college team at any level is terrific, and we gave ourselves 15 extra chances."
The game was ruled by four double-digit runs. First Concordia used a 12-0 run, holding their opponents scoreless for more than seven minutes, to take a 23-10 lead late in the first half. But Goshen turned the tables on defense and didn't allow a point for 5:45, using a 15-0 run to claim a 25-23 lead 60 seconds before halftime.
The Cardinals matched their largest lead of the game, 45-32, at the 12:18 mark of the second half after a 16-4 run, only to watch it evaporate at the hands of five different Goshen scorers. A 3-pointer from Christian Grider put the Maple Leafs up 46-45 with 9:18 left: in three minutes, GC had scored 13 consecutive points and seized the lead again.
Concordia responded with a basket on the other end to pull back in front, but that was short-lived as Goshen led for the final 6:36.
"Offensively, we really struggled tonight but Kody and X made a lot of shots and bailed us out in the end," Young said. "Last weekend we had a lot of possessions where we played really good defense and they still scored, so it was nice to have that go our way this time. I was really pleased with our half-court defense tonight."
Chandler matched his career high with four assists, a total equaled by Heath-Granger for Goshen's team lead. CU's Jalen Thompson led all players with five dimes. Each team finished with 13 assists: Goshen also took the ball away 13 times, a subset of 20 Cardinal turnovers, while giving the ball up 16 times itself.
The Maple Leaf bench outscored Concordia's 27-3 and the visitors had a 12-4 edge in second-chance points.
Goshen has less than 48 hours to prepare for its next opponent as it welcomes Saint Xavier University to Gunden Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. EST.
