GOSHEN, Ind. — Conner Funkhouser scored a team-high 23 points with perfect 8-of-8 shooting off the bench and the Goshen College men's basketball team sank more than three-fifths of its shots from the floor in a 108-79 upset of no. 22 Saint Xavier University at Gunden Gymnasium Saturday evening.

The Maple Leafs (3-2) scored 51 points on 19-of-32 shooting (59.4 percent) before halftime, then bettered both of those marks with 57 points on 19-of-31 shooting (61.3 percent) in the final 20 minutes. GC also drained half of its 20 three-point attempts and 22 of 27 free throws (81.5 percent).

The Maple Leafs led for more than 31 of the game's 40 minutes, holding a double-figure lead for the final 26:41 and pulling ahead by as many as 29 points.

The victory gives Goshen three wins in its last four outings against ranked opponents dating back to February 10 of this year, a span in which the lone defeat was a four-point road loss to eventual national runner-up Saint Francis in the Crossroads League tournament.

Saint Xavier (1-4) pulled in front on two Niko Cahue foul shots just nine seconds into the contest and took an early 6-2 edge. The teams traded baskets to go from 9-9 to 24-21, still in the visitors' favor, with 7:06 elapsed.

Phillips sank two free throws at the 11:10 mark to bring Goshen back to 24-23, the beginning of a 16-0 run that gave the hosts a 13-point edge as the Cougars went nearly eight minutes between field goals. The senior forward scored eight points between the 12:53 and 3:15 marks of the first half, a span in which GC scored 22 points and allowed just three.

Goshen led 51-35 at the half. After the margin fluctuated between 14 and 19 for the first 12 minutes after halftime, Chandler's four-point play sparked 13-3 run over less than three minutes to dash SXU's faint comeback hopes.

With the game in hand at 99-70 and three minutes remaining, Maple Leaf head coach Neal Young used all 14 of his available players: Tanner Camp scored four points, Ben Cotton three and Robert Warrick two, the first points of the season for all three men. Eleven Goshen players scored.

Goshen scored 100 points for the 105th time in school history and the first time since a 100-81 win over Madonna on November 14, 2012. The 107 points were the most since a 115-83 victory over Holy Cross on November 6, 2009.

Cahue led the Cougars with 27 points, knocking down 10 field goals on 17 tries and all seven of his free throws. Teammate Jack Brody led all players with nine rebounds, with SXU grabbing 36 caroms to Goshen's 32.

Newson and Devin Heath-Granger led Goshen with four assists each and Heath-Granger was one of three players with a team-high two steals. The Maple Leafs neutralized their 11 turnovers with 11 steals, claiming a 31-7 advantage in points off turnovers and a 52-21 edge in bench scoring.

Goshen returns to action on Wednesday, November 16, when it visits Indiana University Northwest in Gary. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. EST following the women's game at 6.
