Hot Shooting Lets Leaf Men Down Lourdes

GOSHEN, Ind. — Conner Funkhouser scored 21 points off the bench and Xavier Newson tossed in seven of 11 field-goal tries as Goshen College opened the Best Western Hoopfest with a 74-58 victory over Lourdes University on Friday at Gunden Gymnasium.

Billy Geschke scored in double figures as well with 11 points for the Maple Leafs (1-1), who shot 47 percent from the floor. Kevin Phillips and Alhassan Barrie tied for Goshen's team lead with six boards, one more than Funkhouser. Funkhouser and Phillips also combined to hit 11 of ther 16 shot attempts.

GC finished the first half on a 19-8 run, including the final six points after holding the Grey Wolves (1-1) scoreless in the last 3:45. Lourdes cut its deficit to 51-40 seven minutes after halftime, but a 19-5 spurt gave Goshen its largest lead of 25 points with 4:03 to play.

LeVert Bristol paced Lourdes with 15 points and eight rebounds. Lourdes finished with 36 rebounds to Goshen's 32, but also created more of them by going 3-for-18 from the floor and 11-of-25 at the foul line.

Each team finished with as many assists as turnovers: the Grey Wolves had 16 and Maple Leafs 11. Kris Little of Lourdes led all players with eight dimes. Phillips and Kody Chandler each contributed three steals, while Phillips was the lone player on either team with multiple blocks.

Goshen concludes the tournament on Saturday at 3 p.m. when it meets Ohio Christian. The Trailblazers lost to Bethel College 74-61 in Friday's nightcap: Bethel and Lourdes tip off Saturday's action at 1:00.
