Balanced Attack Keys 25-9 Comeback For Road Win

LINCOLN, Ill. — The Goshen College men's basketball team used a 25-9 second-half run and 59 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes to knock off Lincoln Christian University 75-71 in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon.

GC scored the game's first basket only to see LCU take a 16-8 lead in the first seven minutes. The Red Lions (3-10) led by as many as 11 points in the first half, taking a 35-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.

After falling behind by as many as 16, Goshen (8-4) held its opposition without a basket for more than four minutes while clawing back to tie the game with 7:13 left. GC took the lead for good on two Xavier Newson foul shots at the 2:25 mark, then got a stop and a Christian Grider score to go up 70-67 with 1:56 to play.

The Red Lions got a Zach Thompson basket in the paint to close within 71-69 in the final third of a minute, but were unable to force a turnover on the inbound pass and had to foul. Billy Geschke made both free throws to reach 10 points, his highest total since November 16.

Grider scored a team-high 17 points for Goshen (8-4), which put five players in double figures. Newson finished with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to claim a double-double. The only GC starter with fewer than 10 points was Devin Heath-Granger, who scored eight and led all players with seven assists.

Zach Thompson scored 26 points and Garrett Aielts 22 for the Red Lions (3-10).

The Maple Leafs shot just 32 percent (9-for-28) in the first half, then missed their first five tries of the second stanza before catching fire and making 16 of their final 22 attempts. GC also sank 16 of 19 foul shots (84.2 percent) in the second half and committed just six fouls in the game.

Goshen continues its stretch of three games in three days on Sunday afternoon, visiting Saint Francis in Joliet, Illinois, at 4 p.m. EST.
