Top-Ranked Cornerstone Shoots Way Past GC Men

GOSHEN, Ind. — Top-ranked Cornerstone University denied the Goshen College men's basketball team an upset bid Thursday night, knocking off the Maple Leafs 84-62 in non-conference play at Gunden Gymnasium.

Kyle Steigenga led all scorers with 31 points for the Golden Eagles, followed by 19 from Sam Vander Sluis and 14 from Cory Cox. Dominique Cartier scored 16 and Kevin Phillips 14 for Goshen (9-6, 2-2 Crossroads League).

Cornerstone, which improves to 15-1, led throughout the first half: GC used 4-0, 5-0 and 6-0 runs to close the margin to single digits before the Golden Eagles scored five of the last seven points to lead 41-36 at halftime.

Cox personally scored six of his team's first eight points after halftime before Steigenga scored the next 14 to put his team up 63-47 with 11:07 remaining. The ninth-leading scorer in Cornerstone history, Steigenga left the floor 48 seconds later and did not return, but his teammates extended the lead to as many as 26.

Goshen shot 44.8 percent (13-of-29) from the floor in the first half while making six of 13 three-point tries for a 46.2 percent clip. In the second half, though, GC fell off to an 11-for-33 (33.3 percent) mark from the floor while CU made 19 of its 30 shots.

The Maple Leafs' leading scorers were a tale of two halves: Cartier was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor and 4-for-4 from distance in the opening stanza, while Phillips finished with eight points and Devin Heath-Granger seven in the second half as the two men combned to shoot 5-for-8.

Heath-Granger added a team-high five assists, passing Jeremy High for ninth on GC's all-time assist list and matching Kelly Shepherd for eighth with 307.

The Golden Eagles pulled down 37 rebounds to Goshen's 29: Steigenga finished with eight caroms while Xavier Newson led GC with six and Alhassan Barrie added five off the bench. Each team turned the ball over 10 times and Cornerstone finished with a 22-13 assist edge. CU guard Michael McLaughlin had a game-high nine dimes.

Each team emptied its bench, with all 13 players on both sides seeing at least 1:58 of action. Six Golden Eagles and seven Maple Leafs scored.

GC concludes its non-conference schedule on Saturday afternoon at Grace Bible College. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. in Wyoming, Michigan.
