Box Score MISHAWAKA, Ind. — Xavier Newson and Devin Heath-Granger each scored a career-high 23 points for Goshen College, but host Bethel College used 63 percent shooting from the floor to edge their closest conference rival 106-99 Wednesday night in Crossroads League men's basketball action.
The 17th-ranked Pilots (10-2, 3-1) started the game by making 20 of their first 25 shots, finishing the first half 4-for-11 and still posting a 66.7 percent mark in the first half. Goshen countered with a 19-for-32 clip (59.4 percent); after trailing by as many as 20, Goshen closed to within 55-50 at the half.
Each team's offensive efficiency dropped off somewhat in the second half, with Goshen hitting 48.5 percent of its shots (16-for-33) and Bethel 58.6 percent (17-for-29). The Pilots finished the game 6-for-20 from behind the 3-point arc while Goshen was 13-for-30.
Goshen closed the gap to as few as 3 points, 102-99, on a Newson 3-pointer with 42 seconds to play; Bethel scored twice when the visitors fouled on the following inbound play, then added two more foul shots after a Goshen misfire with 18 seconds left.
In addition to Newson, who was 8-for-15 from the floor with five 3s, and Heath-Granger, who added a team-high five assists, Dominique Cartier scored a career-high 20 on 9-of-13 shooting for the Maple Leafs (6-4, 2-2). 16-for-18 (88.9 percent) at the foul line and 35-for-65 (53.9 percent) from the floor.
Gage Ott scored a game-high 30 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for BC. Nick Kindig added 24 points of his own and went 5-for-11 from beyond the arc. Caleb Oetjen tossed in 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and a game-high nine assists.
In a game that had more shots made than missed, Bethel pulled down 38 rebounds to Goshen's 20 and finished with a 62-38 edge in the paint, although the Maple Leafs' bench outscored the Pilots' 36-18. Kevin Phillips led Goshen with five rebounds and all players with three blocks.
The teams combined for 37 fouls: while GC's Conner Funkhouser was the only player to foul out, of the 12 players to play 19 minutes or more, two-thirds picked up at least three whistles.
Goshen is off this weekend before hosting Roosevelt in a non-conference game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
